Lawmakers in the Philippines abandon nuclear proposal

After the mews of a possible meltdown in two of Japan's muclear reactors, lawmakers in the Philippines headed by Albay Representative Joey Salceda abandoned their proposal to rehabilitate the Bataan Nuclear Power Plant and build more plants.

Salceda said that his reversal of point of view was based on thefact that like Japan, the Philippines is also situated in the Pacific Ring of Fire. This puts the country at continues risk from earthquakes and tsunamis like Japan.

Partido Kalikasan, a Philippine based green political party had been campaigming aagainst the proposal since it was revived in 2008. Lawmakers at that time saw the potential of nuclear power as a solition to the high cost of electricity in the country.
