Mortars Rained on the Evacuation Centers in Maguindanao hit IDPs

Cotabato City, PHILIPPINES: Three civilians including children were hit by shrapnel when the mortars rained on the evacuation centers from the artillery shelling of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) in Maahad Evacuation Center in Barangay Libutan, Mamasapano Maguindanao and Maahad Buayan in Dapiawan, Datu Piang Maguindanao last night at about 10; 00 O’clock in the evening.

Three victims were identified as Faiza Kahar, 7 years old, Said Abas, 17 years old and Bayan Tungadsi, 29 years old married with one offspring. Faiza and Bayan were brought to Cotabato Regional Medical Center in Cotabato City for medical treatment. Bayan already underwent surgical operation; a piece of metal believed to be from the 105 howitzer shrapnel was taken out from his wound in his back and now in a serious condition. Faiza suffer after her left leg were hit by shrapnel also believe to be from the howitzer.. While, Said was not brought to hospital because he was not seriously hurt and decided recuperate at home

More than 20 rounds of mortar shelling were heard from 10; 50 to 11; 15 in the evening of June 15, 2009. accordingly, that deliberate shelling were fired by the military from Upper Salvo, Datu Piang, Barangay Nabundas in Mamasapano and Barangay Satan in Shariff Aguak, Maguindanao three were hit Maahad Evacuation Center in baranagy Libutan Mamasapano and 1 exploded at Maahad Buayan Evacuation Center in Dapiawan, Datu Piang Maguindanao.

According to Tungadsi, Bayan’s father, they were about to sleep that. Upon hearing of continues shelling, Bayan embraced his 4 years old daughter Nur Ain and carried her outside towards a coconut trees for their safety. As he stepped out of their tent, he was suddenly hit on his back and his daughter he was carrying fell down.

Tungadsi family is among of many Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) from sitio Saman in barangay Linantangan Mamasapano Maguindanao who sought refuge in this evacuation camp believing that they are safe in this place. His wife who is working abroad was yet to be informed on their fate.
