The Fight for Mt. Kanlaon Continues... Save Our Heritage!

Protecting the environment is never that easy as government tramples upon the rights of the people and disregard laws just to let big businesses do their things. Is it that hard to understand how important a place like Mt. Kanlaon is? Here is the latest Press Release from Green Alert - Negros...

“Environmentalists welcome Environment Week with Songs, Dance and Rituals of Protests”

Bacolod City - Environmental groups lead Green Alert Negros and Save Mt. Kanlaon Coalition will be welcoming the Environment Week with songs, dance and rituals of protest signifying their disappointment on the recent decision of the Sanguniang Panlalawigan to endorse the entry of the Philippine National Oil Corporation inside the buffer zone of Mt. Kanlaon Natural Park and the support that the Provincial Government, Department of Environment and Natural Resources, Department of Energy and PAMB to further put the biodiversity and watershed of Mt. Kanlaon in crisis.

“There is nothing to celebrate in this environment week because Mother Earth is already dying. The government opens the country from open pit mining, proliferation of dirty energy sources like coal plants, continuous logging of our remaining forests, uncontrolled destruction of our marine resources, promotion of genetically modified organism (GMOs) and privatization of our forest and coastal territories”. Green Alert stressed

Green Alert also slams the Provincial Government to allow the entry of PNOC-EDC knowing that there are other alternative source of energy other than geothermal like hydro-electric, wind and solar.

“If the Provincial Government and the DENR is sincere in its call to protect our environment, it could not have endorsed and supported the entry of PNOC-EDC inside Mt. Kanlaon Natural Park but rather push for other renewal energy sources that has been proven to be available. The Provincial Government lacks the political will to push for other renewal sources of energy and was swayed to believe that by cutting of trees and destroying significant biodiversity in Mt. Kanlaon for geothermal exploration can address the energy crisis”. Green Alert added.

As part of the group’s advocacy to save Mt. Kanlaon Natural Park, they are bringing in famous national musician Joey Ayala for a one night free concert this coming June 22 at North Transport Terminal in SM City Bacolod entitled “Mt.Kanlaon Luwason upod kay Joey Ayala”. The show will start at 6:30 in the evening.
