World Cup 2010 Semifinals: Germany vs Spain - What ever happened to the strong Germans and their superior football skills? Everything seems to be non-existent in their semifinals match. It seems that Spain had been the kryptonite and neutralizer of Germany's superb playing and fluidity in the field. (Photo credit should read RAFA RIVAS/AFP/Getty Images)
In the entire game Spain dominated the match. They keep on attacking the goal of Germany. Although admitedly, Manuel Neuer did one great job in this match, the one goal from Carles Puyol was all that is needed for Spain to win.
Even German Coach, Joachim Löw admitted that Spain's game during the match was superb. Why not? Spain has all its players except two playing for the two best football teams in the World, Real Madrid and Barcelona.
I would like to point out however that the main factor that could have played in this match is intimidation. I think the Germans had been intimidated with Spain. Their game was far from their previous games. The Klose and Schweinsteiger factor was not even there. Their strong midfield game and superiority was entirely absent.
The goal was superb, as Yahoo! News describes Puyol's goal play-by-play:
After coming oh, so close several times—including on back-to-back plays in the 57th minute—Xavi swung a corner kick right into the scrum in front of German goalkeeper Manuel Neuer in the 73rd. With fellow defender and Barcelona teammate Gerard Pique next to him and screening Neuer’s view, Puyol leaped and got the ball.
The World Cup 2010 finals game on Sunday, July 11 will be an entirely new championship match. Both Netherlands and Spain are fighting for the crown for the first time. They are also even on their face-to-face record and this match will be the greatest tie-breaker ever.
