Mike Van Diem, an Oscar award winning Director for his debut film “Character” in 1997 is now back with his latest movie entitled, “THE SURPRISE.” It took him almost 20 years to star in a new film after winning in the Best Foreign Language Film category in the 70th Academy Awards in 1997. Why decide to direct this new movie?
Diem stayed in the Netherlands and direct several commercials despite tons of offers from various film producers. The Surprise will be his return to the big screen. The film is shot in Germany, Ireland and Belgium and will feature three languages – English, Dutch and Hindi.
The Surprise is a romantic comedy which could also be one of many possibilities where love can change everything. The plot tells the story of an eccentric multimillionaire signs an agreement to have his life ended. While selecting his coffin he meets a young woman who has signed up for the same arrangement. Trouble ensues when the couple falls in love and wishes to get out of the contract.
The film stars Jeroen van Koningsbrugge, Georgina Verbaan, Henry Goodman, and Hans de Weers.
DE SURPRISE by Dutch writer Belcampo was the origin of this romantic comedy. According to Van Diem, “The idea is: only when facing death, you live life to the fullest and everyone should live their life like it’s their last day on earth. I thought this was a strong, universal story that I, as a writer/director, could adapt and personalise.”
Watch the film and find out if love indeed conquers all. Surprisingly, this movie will also bring to life the issue of depression and how love can cure that. The Surprise is now showing on selected cinemas nationwide.
