Fire Hits SM Cubao, Razes Mall Basement

MANILA, Philippines - One of the oldest SM Supermalls in the Philippines, SM Cubao catches fire earlier today. Reports from ABS-CBN and GMA said that the fire struck past noon and had reached the 4th alarm level as of 12:25 p.m. The main fire area was the stock room of SM Cubao and since it contains various materials the fire immediately spread in the surrounding basement area.

Several fire trucks are already at the area to put out the fire. According to a team of fire volunteers from ABS-CBN, they could not enter the inner portion of the mall because it was covered by thick black smoke.

Security personnel of SM Cubao had already cordoned the area and firefighters have to wear protective masks and oxygen in order to enter the building. There were no casualties reported at the moment.

One of reasons why the fire fighters failed to immediately enter the mall basement was because there was no immediately available floor plan. Initial investigation and analysis tells that faulty electrical wiring could have been the cause and tenant owners said that the fire started at the Mall Administration's Engineering Department.

Firefighters are also lamenting about the lack of coordination of SM Cubao mall administration. This made the situation worst and made their operations very hard, added to that is the fumes of black smoke coming from the basement.

SM Management said that they will wait for further details about the fire before releasing any official statement.

SM Cubao was newly face lifted just recently in order to be at par with other SM Supermalls.
