The Expendables: A Movie Review

The Expendables Review: An Insight on Why Van Damme and Others Passed - Besides the all star cast composed of veteran action stars Sylvester Stallone, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Bruce Willis, Dolph Lundgren, Mickey Rourke, and Jet Li; plus new age action stars like Jason Statham, Terry Crews, Randy Couture, and Steve Austin, you also have other stars that had been asked but have decided to pass out. Why did they passed out? Here is The Expendables Movie review which might just provide an insight to that.

I have watched the Expendables through a movie premier invited by AXN and Animax with Mei. The special block screening starts 9:00 in the evening which is pretty late I say. I admired the poster and the all start cast and I was eager to watch it though there are comments from others that said that it was a "bull crap."

The Expendables is an all out action movie. When I say all out you will really be mesmerized of the mere action, blood and gore of the movie. The music was perfect and the execution of the sequence was flawless. Though it fails in the level of blood and gore to Ninja Assassin, I would say that this is definitely awesome.

The movie, "The Expendables" also add a flavor of comedy to its dialogue and well it worked. I remember the dialogue where Stallone said to Willis that the reason why Arnold Schwarzenegger was not interested with the job is that Schwarzenegger wants to be President. Then, there is this conversation where Jet Li insists on a higher share of the money because he have to work double due to his height.

The dialogue was very simple and feels like they are truly friends and brothers that were bonded by what they do. The opening sequence of the movie will already tell you what to expect from the rest of the movie... blowing bodies, sprinkling blood and massive explosions.

The Expendables however failed in its storyline. The storyline regarding the rescue attempt and overthrow in Vilena, South America was so shallow and lacks depth. Even the love story between Stallone and the daughter of the general ended in a scene which makes you confused on the real feelings developed between the two.

The story line could have been expounded so that there are explorations on the each of the characters in the movie or even add some intelligent thought to the movie. However what "The Expendables" present is a simple storyline and big action scenes. You do not even need to think to understand this movie.

For me, perhaps this is the reason why Jean-Claude Van Damme, Chuck Norris and even Steven Seagal decided to turn down the offer of Stallone. These three guys concentrate more on the depth of the movie, the plot and their role rather than the money.

Van Damme said in a news that he turned down the offer because he don't like the pitch of Stallone. "Stallone gave me a part in his next movie. [He] said, 'You're gonna make lots of money.' I don't want to hear that, I want to hear what was my character. He was unable to tell what it's going to be."

So there you go, if you want pure action then this is a great movie but if you are looking for a deeper story line then you will just get frustrated with The Expendables.
