"Couples Retreat" starring Vince Vaugn and Jon Favreu emerged as this weeks top box office with a debut of $35.3 million.  It was a surprise for Universal Pictures who had just an optimistic outlook of $20 million.  This surprise came after Universal sacked top managers Marc Shmuger and David Linde and replaced them with Adam Fogelson and Donna Langley.

Sony's "Zombieland," the No. 1 movie the previous weekend, slipped to second place with $15 million, raising its total to $47.8 million.

What was the most surprising was "Paranormal Activity". "Paranormal Activity" was a micro-budget film which has a cost of around $15,000 and now it came in at No. 5 with $7.1 million.  Paramount expanded its midnight-only screenings into daylong release after it had been the talk of the folks at Twitter and Facebook,

Upon further scrutiny it can be said that "Paranormal Activity" was even more popular than this weeks number 1 movie.  The movie averages $44,163 per theater compared with $11,780 for "Couples Retreat"
