UP Diliman Students, Faculty and Staff March Against Charter Change and Gloria

PHILIPPINES: The students, faculty and staff of the University of the Philippines Diliman under the UP Community Against Cha Cha and Gloria (UPAC Gloria) held this afternoon a protest march around the university’s academic oval as part of the nationwide build up to protest the continuing schemes of Macapagal-Arroyo to stay in power. The march was also the community’s public announcement that it will participate in the People’s SONA this July 27, 2009 and to add its voice to the people’s opposition to charter change and to the public clamor for accountability and genuine social change.

Earlier in the week, on July 20, UP Diliman’s University Council (UC), composed of all faculty members with the ranks of assistant professor up to full professor passed a resolution stating the council’s opposition to “all attempts of GMA and her allies to convene an illegal constituent assembly and prolong her rule”.

The College of Mass Communication of UP Diliman issued, the other day, an assessment of the state of the media in the more than eight years of the Arroyo administration. In its assessment, “the College reaffirms its commitment to help media and journalist organizations defend press freedom, and to be part of the de facto alliance that, by resisting the Arroyo administration’s attack on the press and working for the enhancement of professional and ethical media practice, is at the same time defending what remains of Philippine democracy. The College will remain vigilant and continue to watch her, her government and all her minions; and remain critical of all her actions.”

The UP March ended at the Philcoa where a noise barrage was held.
