Prince Frederick von Saxe-Lauenberg

Maidenhead United have made a surprising new signing this week. His Royal Highness Prince Frederick von Saxe-Lauenberg is their new patron.

He is related to every reigning monarch in Europe and shares a common ancestor with the Queen in King Henry II.

Prince von Saxe-Lauenberg told BBC Radio Berkshire that he hopes to attend his first match at York Road in April.

Club chairman Una Loughrey added: "It's fitting that we play in the Royal County and have a prince as patron."
